General Assembly Update
Week Three
January 30, 2009
As
week three comes to a close, we have seen about 600
bills filed, and the pace is picking up! Much of
the talk continues to revolve around the Tobacco
Tax, and the Governor’s involvement continues to
grow. We anticipate the Tobacco Tax to be heard in
Rules Committee and on the House floor next week. As
you probably know the Attorney General’s Animal
Cruelty bill flew through and will be signed next
Tuesday.
Mornings have been kind of slow, as members are
filing bills, but not running them in committees.
Thursday this week was the first day that the House
was in longer than about 30 minutes. Something has
to give soon, and we think next week may be the
start.
Julie, as we discussed Reps. Hoyt, Reynolds and
others are currently drafting our sprinkler language
for review. As you know Rep.
Fred
Allen is working on a similar proposal for
the GLRHBA and we should have the language of both
bills next week and will make decisions from there.
We appreciate all the time and energy that you have
put into this issue and will of course do whatever
you and the board decides but our advice continues
to be that we should wait a bit longer before filing
the legislation. This is also the advice of our
sponsors, especially those on the Senate end, but we
will await your direction.
We
appreciate you continued faith in our ability to
handle your business at the Capitol, and know that
we are here 24/7 if you need to visit with any of
us!
